A cheeky little Italian red from Woolworths
January 16, 2008
I decided to make home made pizza last night and thought it only right that I find a little Italian red to go with the meal.
So off I went to buy all the ingredients and whilst wondering down all the shop isles pretending to know what I needed, I stumbled upon a Rocca Nero d’Avola in Woolworths.
At R39.99 I thought ‘perfect’ - I wont expect too much and at this price - it will be a perfect, unpretentious mid-week quaffer to go with the pizza!
Well this understated Sicilian number over delivered on all fronts and I demand that you go out right now and get a bottle to see what I’m talking about.
Rocca Nero d’Avola
A light to medium bodied wine with intoxicating candy-coated aniseed on the nose. Full of red berry and dried fruit flavours. A distinct gamey, tobacco leaf finish with tannins that leave your mouth watering. Delicious stuff!
I will without doubt buy another bottle of this wine and wholeheartedly recommend it to friends - it’s fantastic stuff for the price.

Congrats on the Italian - I’ve tried desperately to find an Italian wine I actually enjoy. I made short work of the wine list at a posh restuarant in Rome and disliked every bottle! Any recommendations..anyone?

Oracle — you’re in the UK, there’s a huge range of Italian wines available. Check M&S who have some a selection of rare Italain varieties, including Arneis, Peccorino (White) and Reggiano & Nerello Mascalese (red)
Nero d’avila is widely available

I think the Oracle lives somewhere near the Welsh border - perhaps that is why he has not come across any Italian wines.

Fear not, they have wine in Wales

Kesh, at least we have electricity 24/7 without the need for genny’s!
Will check these out Pete, although I have tried a few. Oz Clark has a few recommendations in his favourite 200 booklet, so that may be a good place to start.

Jip the wine is good quality and do not leave your pocket empty. I also commented on it once:
