Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2008

The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show is possibly the toughest wine competition in South Africa. Here below are all the trophy winners for 2008.

But before you take a look I’d like to highlight two things that I think are rather important:

1. Nederberg winning the ‘Most Successful Producer’ trophy is a significant return to form. To have a large and historic  producer like this winning awards is a blessing for the South African wine industry. If we can export award winning wines, at affordable prices and most importantly at volume - then it really is a big step up. Well done Nederburg, lets hope they begin producing iconic wines again.
2. The emergence of Eagles Nest as a winner of two trophies and a Shiraz being our ‘Red Wine of The Year’. One it shows that small, newcomer wineries can beat out all the established competition. Two, it shows us that Shiraz really is becoming our red wine varietal of choice - whether this is just a current market trend or has merit in what South Africa should and will produce in the long term remains to be seen - let’s give it a decade.
