Our president, a dessert wine and the Ryder Cup
September 22, 2008
This past weekend was an exciting and eventful one indeed.
Thabo Mbeki stepped down as the president of South Africa, the USA won the Ryder Cup and I purchased a legendary dessert wine.
I’ll leave you to decide which of the above is more important but here are a few words on each from moi’:
Thabo Mbeki Resigns
He has served this country for 9 years and nurtured unprecedented economic growth for South Africa in that time. His policy was of macro stability for SA and he has achieved that. He should have gone gracefully two years ago. Zuma has promised to represent the people and attend to the micro issues facing those who are in need of housing, education, health care and jobs - well lets see how he does.

USA wins the Ryder Cup
I was hoping the Europeans would win but in the end the USA deserved to win and Azinger did well to rally an underdog team without Tiger. What I can’t stand though, is the crowd behaviour at American golf tournaments and the Ryder Cup is no exception - there’s simply no place for it. The crowd’s scream “Great Shot” as the ball is hit and the ball end’s up in the water - come now people. And as for players Kim and Boo Weekly - pathetically childish.

I bought a legendary dessert wine
On Saturday I was lucky enough to taste some Klein Constantia Vin De Constance 2004 at the majestically beautiful Klein Constantia - I was duly impressed. I then enquired about the ageing potential of the wine and whether or not it rewarded ageing. Out popped a 1988 bottle of the ‘Vin’. Well it was nothing short of sensational and proved to be the knock out blow that sent me straight to the till with all rational lost to buy a bottle of the stuff (not the ‘88 the ‘04).
The wine is expensive (R295) but with the intention of only drinking it when I’m 46 (that’s a scary thought) it’s a worthwhile investment. It’s about time I joined the likes of Austen, Dickens and Bonaparte!

Have a good week people and remember it National Braai Day on Wednesday - good times.
