Whisky Live Festival - a review
November 10, 2008
Last Thursday I attended the Whisky Live Festival in Cape Town with a good friend BB from Compleat Golfer.
Our aim - taste single malt whisky that we wouldn’t ordinarily have the every day budget to buy.
There was one hitch though - the better the whisky, the more coupons you had to handover - but this problem was soon overcome with pure charm and wit (that and the wad of coupons we found lying on the floor).
Here’s a list of my favourites:
The Glenlivet 12yr Old - perhaps my favourite of the show - rich, smooth and elegant. Nutty, honeyed and floral.
Bushmills 1608 - noticeably lighter in flavour than the scotch malts - subtle vanilla and toffee.
Laphroaig 10 yr Old- this classic peaty whisky never disappoints, seaside notes abound - a firm favourite of mine.
Glenfiddich 18 yr Old - rich, complex and mellow drinking - some mulled spice notes.
Dalwhinnie 15yr old - multifaceted: bit of spice, bit of peat, bit of honey, bit of smoke - altogether a very rich whisky.
Lagavulin 16yr Old - it’s like drinking a good cigar!
Talisker 10yr Old - peaty with intense notes of honey and spice.
I have a tendency towards richer, more peaty whiskies I must say.
Tip: when confronted with a single malt - pour a drop into the palm of your hand - rub your hands together until they begin to dry - now cusp your hands and take in the aroma’s - amazing.

SOunds like the event for me - sorry I was not there! I’m the opposite of you - not a huge fan of the peatier ones. Laphroaig to me is weirdly reminiscent of Bacon Kips
Agree 100% on the Glenlivet 12yo - it’s mother’s milk.

i think the best thing to do is have a bottle of each style and just have wee dram of the one you feel like at the time!
