Steenberg Vineyards advertise on The Cru

Date January 26, 2009

It gives me great pleasure in announcing an estate so entrenched in the history of South African wine as the latest estate to advertise on The Cru.

Steenberg was established when:

‘In 1682 Catharina Michelse, also known as The Widow Ras, asked Simon van der Stel for a portion of ground at the foot of the Ou Kaapse Weg and he agreed to lease 25 morgen to her. After he became the owner of Groot Constantia in 1685, she asked him for a legal title deed and a mandate was granted to her in 1688 to “cultivate, to plough and to sow and also to possess” the farm below the stone mountain.’

Since then, the estate has changed hands a number of times with the winery now owned by Graham Beck’s Kangra Group.

With it’s unique setting, one fact remains - Steenberg is capable of producing some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa. They have a track record of ’accolade winning’ Sav Blanc, with the latest being a coveted 5 star rating from John Platter for the Steenberg Magna Carta 2007.

As for the ethos of this estate - I’ll let my brother exlplain is this extract from his post on a recent visit:

Our first stop: Steenberg Wine Estate; it was the first time I had visited the estate and let me tell you that it is an amazing setting, and the time spent there was equally spectacular. We were greeted with big smiles and a bit of bubbly to get us all the mood. The wines were all great, especially the Sauvignon range. there was no charge for the tasting which put smiles all across our faces. We did have a little mishap when one of the staff accidentally spilt luke warm purple cherry soup all over Carey’s White Jacket ( the only white jacket there I might add) but the jacket was whipped away for a frantic wash and returned with a complimentary bottle of Merlot (score!). So about an hour or so later we skipped away towards the buses (also stopped to check an owl in the trees) and cranked up the volume and sped away…

Steenberg was just awesome, friendly staff, beautiful location and fantastic wines. Good times!

It’s fantastic to have Steenberg on board - and I thoroughly look forward to getting to know their wines better and sharing my views on them with you.

And let’s not forget a rather impressive golf course lurking between the vineyards…
