Pinnacle Point and three top class wines.

Date February 3, 2009

You know, life really is tough down here at the ass-end of Africa.

Not only do we have to contend with wild animals, spectacular scenery (the beaches, the mountains), world class wines and perfect summer weekends - but occasionally we have to drag ourselves off to play golf at prestigious golf estates.

Pinnacle Point

This past weekend I had to combine all these nuisances and drag myself off on a golfing weekend with some good friends - Bar Rat, his brother and Blades.

The golf was fantastic - you’d be hard pressed to find a golf course with such drastic scenery and such amazing service. Naturally I shot 4 under par and thoroughly enjoyed my day out on the cliffs of Mossel Bay.

After a hard days golf - we retired to the golf villa to enjoy a butter chicken curry with the wines we had all been tasked to bring along.

Oddbins Reserve Cab/Merlot 1999

Could not believe how good this wine tasted after ten years in the bottle. Just goes to show - even fairly cheap bottles of wine can age superbly. Silky, fruity and incredibly drinkable.

Cederberg Shiraz 2006

A more serious wine with seriously intense flavours. Light and silky tannins - christmas cake and marzipan flavours abound. Almost as good as my approach shot on the 18th!

Gary Player Muirfield 1959 Major Championship Series 2003

A beautful cape blend - dense, red fruit flavours with a touch of mulled spice. Velvety mouthfeel and generous finish…

The golf was ‘magnificant’ and the wine was ‘unbelievable’ - the casino on the other hand was not. Sometimes it pays to quit while you’re ahead and we most certainly were.

Head nice and steady good body torque- I think your body has dipped down a bit too far - left arm kept nice a straight, but I think it could be a bit higher. Cost of lesson -One Oddbin Cab Sauv Reserve. I will collect this weekend

    Dear Crumaster
Perhaps your readers should know that the only way you got near 4 under was the regular shouting of the word ‘Fore!’ and and that you were under-dressed for such an auspicious occasion.
Kindly note: Camo shorts. Black golf shoes with black socks. Springbok rugby jersey golf shirt.
Also, I know where that tee shot ended up…

i can remember too - sent out right over the ocean - then drew it back beautifully to the middle of the fairway - roughly 20m from the green.

    Cru,

Did you count them all :-)…sounds like there are some suspiciously contrary views popping up to your version of events!

Great looking course. Must try to take a look when I’m down next.

    All the best

Shall we tell your readers that you were playing your third shot off the tee?
