A mind blowing South African Cabernet Sauvignon.

Date March 25, 2009

There are those special moments when a bottle of wine comes along and truly amazes you and leaves you somewhat tongue tied.

Perhaps its the anticipation of the wine or the ambiance of the setting that elevates it to ‘memorable’ status. Maybe it’s the food that compliments it or the weather at the time. In my mind, it’s got a lot to do with the people with whom you share the wine.

And of course - sometimes its just the pure liquid magic inside the bottle that makes everything else so superb.

Well lucky for me, all those stars aligned when I shared a bottle of Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 with my dad, two of my brothers and my lovely girlfriend at 1800 Degrees in Somerset Road, Cape Town.

A pitch perfect, juicy and elegant cabernet that went beautifully with our equally perfect steaks from this impressive new outlet.

In his letter to Gulp! readers, Christian Eedes of Wine Magazine wondered whether we had a 5 star Cabernet here in South Africa - well I’d say this is one for sure.

I’ll remember this bottle of wine for the rest of my life and the mere mention of it will take me right back to the place, the food and most importantly the people. That’s the magic of wine and why I love it so much.

“It sloweth age, it strengtheneth youth, it helpeth digestion, it abandoneth melancholie, it relisheth the heart, it lighteneth the mind, it quickenth the spirits, it keepeth and preserveth the head from whirling, the eyes from dazzling, the tongue from lisping, the mouth from snaffling, the teeth from chattering and the throat from rattling; it keepeth the stomach from wambling, the heart from swelling, the hands from shivering, the sinews from shrinking, the veins from crumbling, the bones from aching, and the marrow from soaking.” here is a couple words that descibe the amazing Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon

Perhaps a final word on this. Notwithstanding the fact that this is probably the finest wine I have ever tasted (admittedly my experience is limited), there nothing that enhances a wine more than the company in which you drink it, and there is no one better than those nearest and dearest to you. Tops at Parklane Pmb have a few bottles of the 2003, I cleaned out the 2004 and there are few bottles of the 2005. That should bring the nearest and dearest home soon.
