The best day in the winelands?

The best day in the winelands?

Yesterday was a pretty good day for me. In fact it was such a good day, that I challenge you to top this for a winelands excursion. Where to start? Ah yes, a little round of golf at De Zalze, one of the finest golf courses in the country.

Forget the score (well I am going to anyway), 18 holes there is always a treat. The course is in great shape, always welcomes visitors and is very affordable (R300 winter fees).

After a quick 18, we headed across the estate to Terroir restaurant, one of the top places to eat in the country. While the affordability part of the day might end here, the value certainly does not. (They do have a great winter special of a two-course meal for R150). Michael Broughton’s fine menu (I indulged in an amazing Springbok loin dish) combined with the award-winning Kline Zalze wines, I would argue, is pretty tough to top. In particular, the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2008 and the Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Shiraz 2008 are outstanding wines and if you drink enough of them, you can even forget about the shank on the 5th fairway or the duck-hook on the 12th.

The beauty of this day out is that Kleine Zalze has various winter packages available, including stayovers at the Keline Zalze Lodge.

It’s worth having a look at their website - Kleine Zalze - to see what’s on offer.

(Shame poor BarRat - life’s tough at the top in the world of golf. )

Kleine Zalze was definitely my preferred estate at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show public tastings.

Now about the golf. Can anybody play there, or do have have to be a guest of one of the residents?

    Neel,
That’s the beauty about De Zalze. It’s not a typical members’ club - meaning that they encourage visitors and are actually happy to see you (unlike many other clubs). They have different fees for affiliated players and visitors but relative to the rest of the W Cape its really good value.

    Bar Rat,

Slumming it! Must get down to Terroir again, the food looks awesome.

    Cheers
