Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz 2009
February 25, 2010
It is amazing what clever packaging can do for a wine (a pity then that most South African wine labels are so boring).
Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz 2009 by Cape Classics has hit all the right notes in this department and is flying off the shelves both here in South Africa and most importantly in America.
It even featured on NBC’s Today show - view clip here.
It’s hard not to notice the wine on the shelves when you are walking through Pick n Pay (where it sells for R39) - the packaging is unique, fun, nostalgic and a welcome change to the ‘wine label scene’ here in South Africa.
Now what about the wine? Is it any good?
I personally think you could mix water, food colourant and sugar together and end up with a similar result but that’s not the point.
This wine is unashamedly sweet, different and fun - and it has hit it’s intended target market with sugary aplomb.
For those who complain that the wine market is over saturated - dare to be a little different.
For those who have tried the wine - what do you think of it?

Hey Cru Master
I remember reading this blog entry and thought i’d mention that this Jam Jar was bought to a red wine tasting evening a few weeks ago - admittedly it was completely written off as terrible (which i’m sure you could vouch for!) but the person who is involved in exporting it said it made a great Sangria - worth a try!
ciao ciao

thank belle - very cunning suggestion re making sangria with it.
in fact with winter coming up - it may be worth using for gluhwein!
no sugar needed!

It really gets to me when people write off a wine because of a residual sugar issue. This is a fun yummy wine, great at a braai, stunning with chocolate. It is a good, clean, technically sound wine. I am amused as more “sweet wine” is consumed in this country than dry. Even the dry wine drinkers like about 9 - 16 residual sugar! And JJ is pumping in the USA!

michael i have no doubt many people love the wine and i definitely see the fun side of it and it’s place in the market - it is brilliantly marketed.
i wish i could say i loved it but it wasnt to my taste - i couldn’t even finish one glass of it.
and i’ll definitely be using it for sangria and gluwhein - they shoudl think about that as a suggestion on the back label
