Five wines I suggest you try!

Date March 4, 2010

Here are five wines I have had recently, really loved and suggest you try:

Cederburg Shiraz 2007

At about R140 a bottle it’s not cheap but it’s incredible value for what you get. In fact I don’t think there is better Shiraz for the price. Powerful dark fruit flavours, spice, and dark chocolate (lindt 70% from vida e).

Cape Rock SMV 2007

Available for R110 from Vino Pronto this wine should have a small cult following. Beautifully packaged in a weirdly shaped bottle. Bit of spice, liquorice, velvet,  violet perfume.

Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chenin Blanc Bush Vines 2009

Incredible value at about R35 a bottle. This wine delivers way above it price point and is great for summer occasions. Fresh tropical flavours: peaches, apricots and melons all livened up by fresh, mouthwatering  acidity.

Steenberg HMS Rattle Snake Sauvignon Blanc 2009

This wine will either knock your socks off or leave you terrified. The flavours coming out of the bottle are as vicious as a snake bite. Herbs, grass - mouthwateringly good.

Graham Beck Brut Rose NV

Possibly the best wine I have had this year - subtle pink blush, delicious flambeed strawberry and guava jelly flavours with dense bubbles. A sure winner if you’re trying to impress or seduce a lady!

Give them a go this weekend and let me know what you think!

Can’t fault you on those, except I haven’t tasted the Steenberg.

Shew, I actually think the Kaapse Vonkel offers better value than the Graham Beck. My favourite SA bubbly that I’ve tasted this year has to be the Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Pinot Noir. And if I gave a lady a glass of it she’d be in my bed before yours finishes the glass of Graham Beck.

kaapse vonkel is a perennial favourite - i even wrote a song about it after consuming about two or so bottles (from the bottle).

also love the steenberg bubble - in fact i have a bottle in the cooler box for a trip up to the breede this weekend.

i think we shoudl have a taste off with the ladies involved too - spice it up a bit:)

I recently took a trip to the Cederberg and brought back some trophies one of which was the Cederberg Shiraz. The words ‘powerful’ and ‘dark’ most certainly describe this shiraz. I found the flavours more earthy, like a mouthful of dark bottom soil.

I was a little disappointed because I didn’t feel any of the initial flavours on the nose lingered enough for me to experience anything spicy or chocolate like. so I finished the night off with a slab of Lindt Dark chocolate with orange and almond. Now those flavours were perfectly rounded and the slivers of almond certainly a treat!

“dark bottom soil”??!!! now that’s an interesting flavour! not sure i want to try that!

cant go wrong with lindt dark chocolate with orange and almond though!

Okkkkkk… I gave the Cederberg Shiraz 07 another smash, sipping on it right now actually. It’s definitely a bit of a tough old boot to get through.

This time I’m experiencing SERIOUSLY dark chocolate, it reminds me a bit of being little and having your first spoonful of coco powder expecting something sweet and then feeling devastated because it’s so bitter!

It hasn’t grabbed me but it got a gold Decanter. Retracing my steps I think the German Emmentaler I nom-nomed didn’t do this Shiraz any good.
