Are these old wines any good?
March 8, 2010
I have stumbled upon a cellar full of some old South African wines and I was wondering if anyone had any experience in/opinion on the following selection:
Zonnebloem Cab Sav 1980
Alphen Cab Sav 1980
Meerlust Cab Sav 1984 Magnum 1.5l
Kanonkop Paul Sauer 1991
Glen Carlou Les Trors 1993
Beyerskloof Pinotage 1995
Nederburg Private Bin Cab Sav 1997
Warwick Trilogy 2004
Do you think some of these would be worth buying/opening!?

I would smash that Kanonkop and drink it alone.

Absolutely, kill that Kanonkop. I know that for the Trilogy 2004 was a very good, Ihad it once or twice about two years ago and it was very good.

Don’t know about buying.
But I am sure they are all worth opening!!

It’s a bit of a lottery with some of those: at R50 a bottle, they’re all worth a go, but above R120 per bottle (or R250 for the magnum) I would only go for the Warwick, the Meerlust and the Kanonkop - for which I’d pay substantially more if it’s been stored properly and the bottle’s condition looks good.

Was never a fan of older Trilogy’s (had a really disappointing 10 year vertical there) but I’ve tasted the ‘91 Kanonkop twice in the last 2 years and it has never disappointed - was definitely one of their better vintages in the decade. The Meerlust is also bound to be good (especially given the bigger bottle) - know the ‘82 is still drinking well but not sure what the ‘84 vintage was like (I have a nagging memory about hearing that it was good but not quite as good as ‘82).
