Gordon’s Wine Bar in London

Date March 15, 2010

Last week I urged my good friend The Wine Thief to visit Gordon’s Wine Bar while he was in London.

Gordon’s Wine Bar - the oldest wine bar in London Established 1890

I checked up on him late last week to find out if he had made it there - to which he said no.

I gave him a good rollicking and told him that if he didn’t go we weren’t friends anymore.

On Saturday I got a call from him to say that it was the most amazing place he had ever been to and that he wanted to live there.  Drunk on Bordeaux and standing in the middle of Trafalgar Square (oblivious to how much the call was costing him) - I proceeded to tell him, in kind language, that we were no longer friends in any case because he had made it to Gordon’s Wine Bar and I hadn’t!

This morning the bastard sent me this video clip:

If you are in London - go and have a glass of wine at Gordon’s Wine Bar.

If you are looking for great South African wine - then visit Under the Influence.

Well i noticed there were only two and both from the same producer - Hazy View Wines.

A Pinotage and a Chenin Blanc - none of which I have tasted and/or seen here on the shelves in South Africa.

Are those the wines I would have on the winelist of the oldest wine bar in london? No.

Someone is doing good marketing for them over there though - seem to remember them being mentioned on Naked Wines and even something to do with Jamie Oliver and Matt Skinner.

    Have you tasted them Pete?

It seems to be shippers label. It retails at around £5.95 (basic price in UK) and is made from “a careful selection of high quality grapes grown in South Africa’s Western Cape. Great attention is paid in the vineyard to ensure the best quality grapes, with particular attention paid to the age of the vines and their yields.”

    Oh yeah. Aren’t they all?

So far I’ve found three different merchants who each say

“This wine is bottled especially for us” - http://buyfinewine.co.uk

“This wine is bottled especially for Red Wine Online” - http://www.mixedwineonline.co.uk

“This wine is bottled especially for Kevin O’Rourke Wines” - http://www.wineman.co.uk

Make of that what you will :)
