Taste of Cape Town 2010
March 31, 2010
I was lucky enough to be invited to Taste of Cape Town 2010 and popped in there for a whirlwind tour as I had a wedding to get to in the early afternoon.
Here is my experience in pictures - with notes:
Patron
Not a tequila tasting for the faint hearted - I must have had about the equivalent of 7 shots of tequila in the space of about 15mins!
The tequila was fantastic though - the Patron Anejo was liking sipping on a single malt whisky and the Patron XO Cafe was nothing short of sublime.
Every one of the three dishes they served was brilliant and for me they were the best exhibitor. The cod was sensational and melt in the mouth stuff. The pork belly went beautifully with the Thelema wine from across the lane!
Bistro Sixteen 82
The much lauded Beef Tataki was brilliant but didn’t blow me away. It was impressive in that it made a heavy type of meat seem light, zesty and fresh. The soft shell crab has some interesting flavours (and was a first for me) but isn’t something I would order again at the restaurant itself.
Il Leone
All the dishes were perfectly good but didn’t excite the senses like some of the other dishes on show. The carpaccio with capers was lovely and the chocolate pancake was decadently good.
Bread & Wine
This Bolognese Sausage dish was by far the most impressive dish in terms of looks but was also by far the most disappointing dish of the day - to be honest I thought it was a complete disaster and didn’t even finish it. The old adage - never judge a book by it’s cover.
The Cape Colony
The melt in your mouth mushroom empanada’s were a standout and exceptional value in terms of ‘crowns’ - better than any of the empanada’s I had in Argentina. The vanilla panna cotta was superb (didn’t know you could concentrate so much flavour into button sized blobs of jelly) - a perfect dish to end my experience at Taste of Cape Town.
I ate and drank a lot which I guess is what it’s all about - it certainly made the wedding ceremony interesting!
Taste of Cape Town is a great experience - but you have to go full out - take lots of money and indulge without reason.

Sounds like a really good time. I love a good tequila! In fact, it’s by far my favorite spirit it terms of the buzz it gives! Cheers~

Ironically, I left Cape Town for PE on the day that I had complimentary tickets to Taste of Cape Town & so managed to miss it despite being in the country!! Hubby went though and although he liked it, he agreed that it was an expensive exercise once you started spending crowns…
