Gluhwein Recipe

Date April 9, 2010

It’s pretty chilly in Cape Town today and winter seems to be trickling into to town.

So what better way to warm the soul and lift the spirits than a glass or two of Gluhwein!

Here’s a simple recipe:

750ml red wine

2/3 cup of sugar

2 cinnomon sticks

5 cloves

1 big bay leaf

1 sliced up lemon

1 sliced up orange

2 cardamon pods

1 Vanilla pod

Just mix it all together in a pot and mull it over medium heat for about and hour or so - do not let the concoction come to a boil.

Pretty easy stuff - you can mix the ingredients up a bit to taste and leave some out if you can’t find them all (Robertsons All Spice would work pretty well I think).

Some supermarkets have ‘ready made’ gluhwein sachets that you just add to the wine - I’m sure those will do.

If I were to choose a wine as the base - I would look no further than the Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz 2009 sold at Pick n Pay!

Enjoy!
